Professional Experience

C4L · Network Engineer February 2013 - Present

Responding to the needs of the business, I relinquished my previous role in order to join the network team in a wholly hands-on capacity. I was asked to become the principal engineer on a project to architect, design, and deploy a new network.

The new network project's purpose was to replace the existing Cisco network, based around long-path Ethernet VLANs running PVST, with a network using Juniper and Extreme devices, where VPLSs over MPLS would deliver layer 2 services, and a centralised, dedicated BGP core would deliver layer 3 services.

For the project, I produced designs ranging from high-level topologies for the connection of the 24 datacentres, through to BGP and VPLS endpoint relationships, right down to detailed, specific configurations for Juniper MX routers. I personally planned and implemented the migration of all tier 1 providers and peering exchanges onto the new network.

While in this role, I also had involvement with business-as-usual activities, which included pre-sales, provisioning, maintenance, and support functions. Additionally, I served as a technical trainer and mentor for other members of my immediate team, as well as to the sales and technical support areas of the business.

C4L · Infrastructure Manager September 2012 - February 2013

Following a re-organisation within the business, my responsibilities were expanded to include the running of all elements of the technical infrastructure management, for both network and systems operations.

I was called upon to manage and to provide technical mentoring and guidance to the teams who architected, designed, implemented, maintained, monitored, and supported both the network and the server and storage environments.

The infrastructure teams were also involved with pre-sales solution specification for customer opportunities, provisioning for complex customer configurations, delivery of the more complicated customer managed services, as well as being an escalation point for technical support. I personally had a hands-on involvement in many cases.

C4L · Systems and Software Manager March 2011 - September 2012

Due to the growth of the server and storage services part of the business, I formed a new department dedicated to technical operations for that area. This also included a software engineering function to develop platforms in support of this area's growth.

The systems and software department grew to over ten people, and as well as continuing to perform hands-on work, I was required to manage the staff, the maintenance and expansion of the technical assets, and delivery of projects for this area.

The most noteworthy project initiated and fully delivered during this time was an in-house developed virtualisation-management platform, which used free and open-source components to provide a complete cloud server hosting environment.

C4L · Solutions Architect September 2008 - March 2011

Joining an organisation whose business mostly comprised of datacentre colocation and connectivity services, I was initially called upon to design and implement a new service portfolio that expanded into providing virtual and physical servers, as well as shared SAN hosting.

In addition to the server and storage services, because of the small size of the technical team, I was also involved in pre-sales, provisioning, and support for the Ethernet and IP services, giving me extensive exposure to Internet service provider operations as a whole.

G3 · Systems Engineer March 2008 - September 2008

Working for a solutions and software-development business, my role involved activities in both of these areas. The business mostly focussed on smaller customers looking for one provider to deliver all aspects of the technology infrastructure.

In the solutions delivery part of my role, I was involved in setting up and providing ongoing support for both Windows and Linux servers, as well as Cisco and Linksys networking and telephony devices. This included messaging, database, anti-malware, backup and voice communication server software, as well as wired and wireless access, firewall, VPN, and access control on small-office routers and switches.

My involvement in the software development side of the business included both additions and modifications to existing web applications, and the creation of a number of small web applications. I created and supported both ASP and PHP applications, examples of which include support desk, accommodation reservation, and business metrics reporting.

Deverill Ltd · Senior Technical Consultant April 2003 - March 2008

As a technical consultant within the solutions and services part of the business, my time was mostly spent on implementations and pre-sales support, though I also spent some time providing high-level technical support to the helpdesk and remote managed operations teams.

On the pre-sales side, I was required to attend customer visits alongside salespeople to identify and refine the appropriate solution to the customer's requirements. This would usually be followed up by specifying the needed hardware, software, and engineering for the suggested solution, as well as writing the technical portion of a proposal to the customer.

Other activities I performed relating to my pre-sales role included delivering technical presentations at briefings hosted by the company to educate customers about new technologies, as well as participation in the product review process, in which I would make recommendations and perform technical evaluations of new products.

On the implementation side, I was involved in the larger projects undertaken by our engineering teams. This was usually projects where a large contingent of VMware and SAN infrastructure, or complex Cisco network environments were to be employed.

Deverill Ltd · Internal Systems Support May 2000 - April 2003

To support the various groups within the business, including teams such as the helpdesk, remote managed operations, and systems engineering, a diverse infrastructure incorporating multiple private and publicly-facing networks and servers was required.

During the time that I was responsible for the internal systems of the business, I implemented and supported Cisco routing, switching, and firewalling devices, as well as Windows and BSD servers performing various roles as required to deliver the requirements of the various departments.

Projects I undertook included redesigning the network to separate departments with differing security stances into their own firewalled VLANs, migrating from a NetWare NDS to a Windows AD, implementations and upgrades of a number of Exchange, SQL and Terminal Services servers, as well as the adoption of a number of new line-of-business applications.

Deverill Ltd · Helpdesk Analyst December 1999 - May 2000

As a provider of IT solutions, services, training, and software development, the business operated a helpdesk that customers could contact for support on hardware and software problems. The support provided included covering items such as desktop and server hardware, networking devices, Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft BackOffice applications, and Citrix MetaFrame.

I performed a third-line role on the helpdesk, receiving problems escalated from the first-line and second-line analysts. I gathered experience dealing both with smaller organisations without technical staff, as well as with larger organisations incorporating their own technical teams.

In the role, I was required to work to contracted service levels having varying response and resolution targets. The helpdesk team used an incident management application, in which all activity from initial contact to final closure was logged.

Deverill Ltd · Configuration Engineer March 1999 - December 1999

Working in a section of the business where server configuration was performed prior to equipment being dispatched to the customer, I performed both hardware and operating system setup, mostly on Compaq ProLiant servers.

The role included installing of components such as additional processors, memory, expansion cards and tape drives into various different models of server. I would liaise with the systems engineer who was to perform the on-site installation to determine the desired setup, and then implement this before shipping the server.

I was required to use both order processing and job management applications to co-ordinate my work on each job with sales, logistics, and service delivery sections of the business.

Interests

For me, technology is a passion both in and out of the working environment. I spend a lot of my free time playing with technology at home. My home network and servers include many of the technologies that I am excited by in the workplace.

I am an avid gamer and spend a great deal of time playing online role-playing games. I spend most of my in-game time playing healer classes. I've enjoyed meeting people in real life that I've come to know in game.
